EN LA ACTUALIDAD ES LA VÍA DE ACCESO A LA PRÓSTATA MÁS UTILIZADA TANTO POR SU FACILIDAD DE APRENDIZAJE COMO POR SU ALTO RENDIMIENTO DIAGNÓSTICO.\n\nEN 1989, HODGE Y COLS. PUBLICARON SU TÉCNICA DE BIOPSIA SEXTANTE EN UNA SERIE DE 136 PACIENTES CON TACTO RECTAL ANORMAL, OBTENIENDO UN AUMENTO DEL RENDIMIENTO EN EL DIAGNÓSTICO DEL CÁNCER \n\nDE PRÓSTATA AL COMPARARLO CON LA HASTA ENTONCES BIOPSIA DIRIGIDA A LOS NÓDULOS HIPO ECOICOS. ESTOS AUTORES CONSIDERARON QUE LA LONGITUD MEDIA DE LA PRÓSTATA ES DE 4 CM. Y SUGIRIERON QUE TOMANDO 3 CILINDROS DE CADA LÓBULO CON UN 1 CM. DE SEPARACIÓN DIAGNOSTICARÍAN LOS TUMORES CON VOLÚMENES DE 1 CC O MAYORES. CON ESTA TÉCNICA SE OBTIENEN 6 CILINDROS DE LA LÍNEA PARASAGITAL A MEDIO CAMINO ENTRE EL BORDE LATERAL Y LA LÍNEA MEDIA DE LA PRÓSTATA EN AMBOS LÓBULOS A LA ALTURA DE LA BASE, PORCIÓN MEDIA Y ÁPEX. DE FORMA CASI INMEDIATA FUE ADOPTADA COMO LA TÉCNICA ESTÁNDAR PARA LA BIOPSIA DE LA PRÓSTATA.\n\nEN 1995 STAMEY, PROPUSO EL DESPLAZAMIENTO LATERAL DE LAS PUNCIONES CON EL OBJETIVO DE INCLUIR NO SOLO MÁS CANTIDAD DE ZONA PERIFÉRICA EN CADA CILINDRO SINO TAMBIÉN INCLUIR LA PORCIÓN ANTERIOR DE DICHA ZONA. COMPROBÁNDOSE POSTERIORMENTE EN OTRO ESTUDIO QUE CON ESTA TÉCNICA DE BIOPSIA SEXTANTE LATERAL SE AUMENTABA EL RENDIMIENTO EN UN 14,6% CON RESPECTO A LA BIOPSIA SEXTANTE CLÁSICA."
